From the south (Bakersfield), take Amtrak California's San Joaquin train 701 to Mammoth Lakes via Merced. From the west (Bay Area), take San Joaquin train 712 to Mammoth Lakes via Merced. Once at Merced, transfer to a comfortable, air conditioned Amtrak Thruway bus for service to Mammoth Lakes (provided by YARTS). This bus stops at Yosemite, where you’ll have enough time to get out, walk around, and explore, before continuing on to Mammoth Lakes.
Amtrak California has several “official” stops along this route, with the final stop of Mammoth Lakes located at Mammoth Mountain Inn. However, this bus stops at multiple locations in the Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes area. Passengers are welcome to deboard (or board) at any of the stops along the route (between Merced and the final stop at Mammoth Mountain Inn).
See the Amtrak California Mammoth Lakes 2011 schedule (Click here to download PDF). Please note: Service to Mammoth Lakes is seasonal and limited to June, July, August and September. Bus service operates on weekends only in June and September. Buses run daily during the months of July and August.
The Mammoth Lakes Thruway Bus route is serviced by YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System). For a complete list of all stops, visit the YARTS website.
Coming from further away? Merced is also accessible via the Pacific Surfliner (from the South) or the Capitol Corridor (from the Bay Area and/or Sacramento area) with Amtrak Thruway bus connections to the San Joaquin route.
