The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner is operated by Amtrak and administered by the California Department of Transportation in partnership with city and county agencies. The Surfliner operates 11 daily round trip trains between San Diego and Los Angeles. Four round trips extend north to Santa Barbara and one of these provides a daily train to San Luis Obispo. Scheduling and track improvements have improved safety, on-time performance and reduced delays.

Pacific Surfliner service features a lounge cafe offering a wide selection of sandwiches, snacks and beverages. Bicycles can be loaded inside on the lower level of the Pacific Surfliner passenger cars or stored for a nominal fee. Baggage service is available on certain Surfliners at staffed stations only. Passengers should contact Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or www.amtrak.com for specific information on the availability of baggage services. Baggage service is not available at Van Nuys, Irvine or San Juan Capistrano stations. Carry on luggage is permitted on board and can be stored in overhead bins or luggage racks in each car.

New stations have been constructed along the route in part­nership with cities and counties and older stations have been renovated. Major improvements at Fullerton, Glendale, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara have restored the stations to their original historical form.

Pacific Business Class Car: The Pacific Surfliner trains offer deluxe reserved seating in Business Class with outlets for laptop computers. To make travel more comfortable, Business Class cars have large reclining seats, more legroom and offer complimentary snacks, beverages and newspapers. Reservations are required for Pacific Surfliner Business Class. Except for some holiday periods, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner coach class section does not require advance reservations. Some Amtrak long distance trains may require reservations.
