Effective April 26, 2004, a second stop was added to Barstow at Barstow Station/McDonalds, 1611 East Main Street, 92311 (This stop will be IN ADDITION TO the Barstow Train Station - Harvey House).
Barstow Amtrak (658 North 1st Avenue) is an unstaffed station located at the former home of the Barstow Harvey House ("Casa del Desierto"), a restaurant and hotel chain formed in the 19th century to provide a "home cooked" meal and a wholesome atmosphere for people traveling by trains. The Fred Harvey Company developed restaurants in a number of Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Stations throughout the southwest, including many in California.
Laurence Deutsch, President of the Western America Railroad Museum (WARM) at the Harvey House, Barstow sent me the folowing note on May 10, 2005, the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah, in 1869.
"Currently, there are two museums in the Harvey House: the Route 66 Museum and the Western American Railroad Museum (WARM): www.barstowrailmuseum.org. WARM gives tours through the Harvey House for groups by appointment only. A donation is requested. Also, the Barstow Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau has now located in the old Depot portion of the complex.
The Bus Depot, the snack bar, vending machines and gift shop which were in the old depot is now gone. But each museum has gift shops and sell cold drinks and candies."
Barstow station is served daily by the Southwest Chief and Amtrak California motor coaches traveling between the San Joaquin trains in Bakersfield, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
