Although tickets for San Jose can be purchased directly from the bus driver, passengers traveling beyond San Jose can save money by buying tickets in advance from an Amtrak travel agent, over the telephone from Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or over the internet from Amtrak's home page, http://tickets.amtrak.com.
Located downtown, and only a few blocks from the San Lorenzo River, Metro Center is one of the few downtown buildings to have only minimal damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, whose center was only a few miles inland from Santa Cruz.
Major points of interest other than the beaches include the Boardwalk with its wooden roller coaster, the University of California campus, Mission Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz Shakespeare Festival, and the Santa Cruz, Big Trees and Pacific Railway.
